This film version of the Broadway musical comedy of the same name provides a musical retelling of the days leading up to July 4, 1776. Set in Philadelphia in the summer of 1776, Continental Congressmen John Adams and Benjamin Franklin coerce Thomas Jefferson into writing the Declaration of Independence while they try to persuade the American colonies to support a resolution on independence. This fictionalized account depicts the events, both comical and melodramatic, that led up to the signing of the Declaration of Independence. Music by Sherman Edwards. The film was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy and Harry Stradling Jr. was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Cinematography.
