The Kindergarten Gear Up program was created by public librarians to help communities close gaps in school readiness. The program provides families with structured, research-based early learning experiences that build literacy, cognitive, and social-emotional skills—especially for children without access to preschool.
Kindergarten Gear Up has demonstrated strong, measurable results in improving school readiness and family engagement. Through seven states and eight library systems, this program has
• Increased caregiver confidence and family participation through guided activities and take-home resources
• Improved children’s literacy, school readiness, and social-emotional development
