If a friend or family member is showing signs of suicide, do you know what to do or say? Suicide Prevention is everyone's business. This session will focus on older adults. Registration is required.
Just as people trained in CPR help save thousands of lives each year, people trained in QPR learn how to recognize the warning signs of a suicide crisis and how to question, persuade, and refer someone to help. QPR is an emergency mental health intervention for suicidal persons that any community member can provide. The intent of which is to identify and interrupt the crisis and direct that person to the proper care. This training will provide the same overview of the QPR Approach, but with specific data, considerations, and resources aimed at the older adult population. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, older adults (age 65 and over) represented 16 percent of the total U.S. population in 2019. And in 2020, older adults ages 50 to 85+ had a higher rate of death by suicide than the general population. Recognizing this population is disproportionately affected, it’s critical that we address suicide prevention in this group of Americans - starting with this training!
By participating in QPR Gatekeeper training, you will learn about:
• Early Recognition of suicide | The sooner warning signs are detected and help sought, the better the outcome of a suicidal crisis will be.
• Early QPR | Asking someone about the presence of suicidal thoughts and feelings opens up a conversation that may lead to a referral for help.
• Early intervention and referral | Referral to local resources or calling for evaluation and possible referral is critical.
This event is for adults and teens. If you have a teen under the age of 18, we ask that a parent or guardian complete their registration and sit in on the training with them as well.
