They derive their meaning from the famous poem “In Flanders Fields” by Lieutenant Colonel John McCrae, a Canadian physician and soldier in World War I. The poem describes the red poppies growing among the graves of soldiers in Flanders, a region heavily impacted by the war. The imagery of the vibrant flowers blooming amidst the devastation struck a chord, and the red poppy quickly became a symbol of the bloodshed and sacrifice of soldiers who lost their lives in military combat.
